Under a program of research sponsored by the Electric power Research Institute, Economic Dynamics, Inc. has endeavored to develop an adaptive economics metho¬dology for explaining and projecting energy supply. The ultimate goal of this research is the specification of improved, realistic, operational, dynamic, energy supply models. In pursuit of this goal four specific studies were completed. First, the theoretical ingredients of adaptive economics were inte¬grated into a coherent methodological framework within which specific modelling studies could be undertaken. Second, the recursive programming approach to adaptive modelling was reviewed, applied studies of petroleum and coal mining sectors were reviewed, and a new experimental multicenter, temporary equilibrium, recursive programming model was developed and tested. Third, a careful review of the coal mining sector, and of past coal supply analyses was undertaken with a view to establishing the feasibility of developing improved adaptive mode's of the coal mining sector.

Under a program of research sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute, Economic Dynamics, ino has endeavored to develop an adaptive economics method¬ology for explaining and projecting energy supply. The ultimate goal of this research is the specification of improved, realistic, operational, dynamic, energy supply models. As a contribution to this overall objective, the present volume presents the theoretical framework of adaptive economics and the structure and applications of recursive programming, a methodology which has proven to be useful for adaptive economic modelling. Part I deals with adaptive economics: a general framework, methodologies, adaptive goal-adjustment models, and the theoretical link between behavioral rules and macroeconomic dynamics. Part II is devoted to recursive programming: general concepts, characteristic features, a recursive programming model of the petroleum industry, and a multisector study of resource allocation and alternative energy supplies.

The methodology has usually been applied to conceptual models for which careful empirical estimation has not been performed. Our report indicates that new progress in statistical-econometric methodology should help rectify this short¬coming. it should be emphasized, however, that carefully designed simulations of conceptual (as opposed to empirical models) can and should play a major role in the analysis of complex dynamic systems even when good empirical data are lacking. System dynamics provides one useful approach for such exercises.

A small-scale laboratory magnetic suspension system, the Large Angle Magnetic Suspension Test Fixture (LAMSTF) has been constructed at NASA Langley Research Center. This paper first presents some recent developments in the mathematical modelling of the system, particularly in the area of eddy current effects. It is shown that these effects are significant, but may be amenable to modelling and measurement. Next, a theoretical framework is presented, together with a comparison of computed and experimental data. Finally, some control aspects are discussed, together with illustration that the major design objective of LAMSTF - a controlled 360 deg rotation about the vertical axis, has been accomplished.

A general model of the dynamics of flexible robotic manipulators is presented, including the gross motion of the links, the vibrations of the links and joints, and the dynamic coupling between the gross motions and vibrations. The vibrations in the links may be modeled using lumped parameters, truncated modal summation, a component mode synthesis method, or a mixture of these methods. The local link inertia matrix is derived to obtain the coupling terms between the gross motion of the link and the vibrations of the link. Coupling between the motions of the links results from the kinematic model, which utilizes the method of kinematic influence. The model is used to simulate the dynamics of a flexible space-based robotic manipulator which is attached to a spacecraft, and is free to move with respect to the inertial reference frame. This model may be used to study the dynamic response of the manipulator to the motions of its joints, or to externally applied disturbances.

The study describes the development of improved tire models suitable for inclusion in dynamic vehicle simulations, and compares their performance to provide guidelines for model selection and use. The literature on dynamic tire modelling has been reviewed to identify the major areas for model improvements. Four basic tire models, representing extensions of existing analyses, have been developed. These models range from the simple non-enveloping point contact model to the fully enveloping adaptive footprint model which includes both inflation pressure and carcass stiffness effects, and simulates a dynamically varying footprint. Analyses and governing equations for the vertical and fore-and-aft tire force arising during operation over non-yielding ground are presented for each model. Methods of quantifying the model parameters from tire specifications and other data are described.
